At around 12 noon of the Indian independence day of 2006, an SI of Binanipuram police station, K.N Rajesh during his patrol duty got information about a secret meeting of SIMI taking place at Happy Auditorium, Panayikulam. He quickly reached the auditorium and overheard the speeches being made. He heard a man named Abdul Rasik say,
“the nation India is built by the British. Before that it was a group of Muslim countries ruled by Mughals and Nizams. The existing governments are against Muslims. There are various types of black laws against the Muslims in India. They are torturing the Muslims by invoking TADA and NSA. The Indian military is killing the Muslims who are conducting Jihad for the freedom of Kashmir. SIMI is trying to protect the interest of Muslims in India. Nobody can restrict or eradicate SIMI. We should bring back India to its original position through SIMI etc”
to which all the others present applauded. SI Rajesh along with fellow officers then entered the hall and all 18 present were taken to the police station after which the arrests of those on the dais to speak were registered. Books and literature related to SIMI that were pro Pakistani, anti-Govt., seditious and inflammatory were seized from their possession.

In November 2015, an NIA special court in Ernakulam convicted 5 of the accused and 11 were acquitted. NIA had filed an appeal at the Kerala High Court against their acquittal. However, the Kerala High Court on 12 April 2019, overturned the conviction of the 5 and set free the 2 who were awarded 14 years imprisonment and fines and the 3 who were awarded 12 years imprisonment and fines.
